The Association of Hungarian Culture
– your doorway to Hungary!
Association of Hungarian Culture, UKS (which means ‘door’ in Estonian) unites Hungarians living in Estonia, students studying Hungarian and other supporters and admirers of Hungary and Hungarians. The aim of the association is to introduce and promote Hungary and Hungarian culture in Estonia.
The association was established in March 2004 as HEEMP (Hungarian-Estonian Massive Progress) Estonian-Hungarian Cultural Society. In the same time it’s sister organization was founded in Budapest. The association was reorganized and got its new name, UKS, in October 2007.
Our main goal is to promote cultural relationships between Hungary and Estonia. In this purpose, we organize different events – film days, exhibitions, concerts, literature seminars, workshops etc. in cooperation with other similar organizations, institutions and foundations.
Our special focus is on literature – introducing and translating Hungarian literature, establishing new league of translators. We arrange literature seminars and workshops for young translators; one of our objectives is to create web-based center of Estonian-Hungarian literature to promote Hungarian literature amongst the Estonian readership.
Traditionally we arrange Hungarian Film Days every fall in Tartu together with exhibitions, concerts and other cultural program. Film Days are always focusing on Hungarian modern films and young film producers.
In October 2010 there will be already the 8th Hungarian Film Days in Tartu.
